9 New Girls...and a Boy

Today we finally put our chickens outside in their pen. They were getting too big for the box that we were keeping them in, and they were also getting enough feathers to start flying around. I have had to catch a few of them after they have "flown the coop!" It took them about an hour to figure out that outside in a pen was much better than being in a box. They weren't sure about being confined, but after awhile, they got the hang of it and are doing well. We'll see how they handle overnight living. One thing is for sure...they LOVE table scraps! I can't wait till the grandkids get back to grandpa and grandma's house. It's much more fun to be here, now that we have the chickens to feed and watch. We won't get any eggs for about 5 months from now. They will then lay every 25 hours, which means that we will be finding friends around here that could use some eggs!

I'm not sure how we're going to name them - they all look alike!

We have also added a boy to the family, but he is only staying for a week. Landon has a health project that includes a "flour" baby, dressed and watched at all times, that gives him a pretty hefty grade for 4th semester. He was pretty proud of his new "son's" outcome, and especially loves the quote on his overalls!

What happened to the 10th chicken? What kind of chickens did you get? We got chicks a little more than 2 weeks age. We have 2 barr-rock, 2 chochins, 2 rhode island red, and one that we are not sure about. Our neighbor gave us 3 chicks and we bought the other four. We are having a blast with them! The grandkids will LOVE them!!!

Can't wait to show the kids the videos but they are in bed now! I wish we could get some chickens. Maybe someday! And sorry, but Landon's flour baby is pretty creepy! Haha. But the overalls are cute!

Cool on the chickens, can't wait. Great looking pen. Sure wished we lived close by so we could share in the duties. For now, we'll be buying store bought eggs ha ha...what in the heck is a flour baby? Did he name him Nash or is he a Kevin L. Junior? ha ha

P.S. Can't wait to play with you Lando!!

Our 10th chicken got out sometime while they were in the box, because all of a sudden, we count 9. I'm sure that one was some cat's dinner. They are all White Leghorns, which lay the largest eggs. Maybe someday down the road, we will expand our horizons and get different ones. Landon's baby is made out of a 5 lb. bag of flour, and his name in Wally Marty Willard, in honor of his Walmart smiley-face head!

havin chickens is definitely fun! and the eggs are always nice. you just have names and then call them all different names unless they have specific details lol. or wait for your grandkids to name them they'll love that. we let our friends name ours and they are named browny blacky flowry big red chicken... idk just a few. they're silly but its fun.

p.s. the eggs taste so much better too!

Haha I showed Eden the videos of the chickens and she thought that you were LIVE, Mom. She was talking to you as if you could hear her- "Hi, Grandma! Hi Grandma!" and then when you asked the chickens if they were going in the box, Eden said, "Yeah, Grandma!" I guess we need to call you so she can talk.
